About the University/Organization

The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU), established in 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, is India’s first full-fledged sui generis law university. Through its premier School of Excellence in Law (SOEL), Chennai, and affiliated colleges across Tamil Nadu, it has pioneered holistic legal education.

The university offers diverse undergraduate and postgraduate law programs across thirteen specializations, as well as a Doctoral programme that emphasizes global research. TNDALU has consistently promoted advocacy, legal reform, and academic excellence, earning recognition as a leading hub for budding lawyers.

The Moot Court Association (MCA) of SOEL is known for organizing flagship events, including the prestigious Pro Bono Enviro National Moot Court Competition.


About the Event

The Pro Bono Enviro National Moot Court Competition is the flagship annual event of SOEL, conceived to encourage awareness, scholarship, and advocacy in environmental law. Now entering its 19th edition, the competition has earned a reputation for its innovative propositions, challenging rounds, and the presence of eminent judges, including Justices of the Supreme Court of India, Judges of the High Court of Madras, and Senior Advocates.

Over the years, the competition has become a premier platform for law students across India to test their research, drafting, and oral advocacy skills on issues of contemporary ecological importance. The 2025 edition will be held in hybrid mode, ensuring both wider participation and the dynamism of in-person finals.

Format and Structure

The competition will be conducted in multiple rounds, beginning with online Preliminary, Octa-final, and Quarter-final rounds, followed by offline Semi-finals and Finals at the Perungudi campus of TNDALU.

Each team will argue as both Petitioner and Respondent in preliminary rounds, ensuring comprehensive evaluation. Scoring will be based on knowledge of law, use of authorities, clarity of arguments, courtroom conduct, and advocacy skills.

Memorials will be judged independently by experts, while oral rounds will be evaluated by distinguished panels of judges.

  • Venue: The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Perungudi Campus, Chennai (for advanced rounds).
  • Mode: Hybrid (Preliminary to Quarter-Finals online; Semi-Finals and Finals offline).

    • Plus additional awards including 2nd Runners-Up, Special Mentions, and “Spirit of the Competition” Award.
  • Eligibility: Bona fide law students enrolled in a 3-year or 5-year LL.B./B.L. course from institutions recognized by the Bar Council of India. Only one team per institution is permitted. Teams must consist of 2–3 members (2 Speakers + 1 Researcher).
  • Registration Fee: ₹3,000 per team (non-refundable).
  • Certificates: All participants will receive e-certificates.
  • Accommodation: Available for teams qualifying to the advanced rounds on a paid basis (to be communicated later).
