The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is a premier institution known for its excellence in legal education and scholarship. In honor of the late jurist H.M. Seervai, the University conducts the Annual H.M. Seervai Essay Competition in Constitutional Law, a prestigious platform for aspiring law students to showcase their expertise in constitutional matters.


About the Event

Initiated in 1997 by Senior Advocate Navroz Seervai, this essay competition commemorates the legacy of Hormasji Maneckji Seervai, one of India’s greatest legal minds. The competition invites original and thought-provoking essays on contemporary constitutional law themes.
The 28ᵗʰ Edition focuses on strengthening Indian democracy through amendments to election law. The winner receives the H.M. Seervai Gold Medal and gets their essay published in the National Law School Journal.

  • Eligibility:
    Open to law students enrolled in LL.B., B.A. LL.B., BBA LL.B., or B.Com. LL.B. programs in any recognized institution in India.

    “How should Indian Election Law be amended to strengthen Indian constitutional democracy?”
  • Submission Guidelines:
    • Original, unpublished, single-authored essay.
    • Length: 7,000–10,000 words (inclusive of footnotes).
    • Formatting: Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced; OSCOLA citation style.
    • Attach a bonafide certificate signed by an institutional authority.
    • Plagiarism checks mandatory.

Location

The competition is conducted online, with entries submitted digitally.
