About the 2nd GCRCJS Criminal Law Essay Writing Competition

The 2nd GCRCJS Criminal Law Essay Writing Competition offers an opportunity for students and researchers to engage critically with India’s criminal justice system. As India celebrates 78 years of independence, the competition encourages participants to reflect on the transformative shifts in the criminal justice landscape.

Participants are invited to explore the theme: “Evaluating the Shifting Features of India’s Criminal Justice System After 78 Years of Freedom”. This provides a platform to delve into key issues, challenges, and opportunities within India’s evolving criminal justice system.


Competition Sub-Themes

Participants are encouraged to write essays focusing on the following sub-themes:

  • Analysing the Three New Criminal Laws
  • Emergence of White-Collar Crime
  • Functioning of Special Investigation Agencies
  • Introduction of New Crimes
  • Continuance of Colonial Hierarchy in the Criminal Justice System
  • Emergence of New Criminal Activities through Cyberspace
  • The Rise of State Policing
  • Criminal Justice Administration: Studying the Criminal Bureaucracy

These sub-themes offer a diverse range of perspectives, providing ample scope for research and analysis on the modern-day challenges facing India’s criminal justice system.


Essay Guidelines

  • Word Limit: 1500-2000 words (excluding footnotes)
  • Font: Times New Roman
    • Headings: Font size 14
    • Body: Font size 12
    • Footnotes: Font size 10
  • Line Spacing: 1.5 for the body, 1.0 for footnotes
  • Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides
  • Citation Style: OSCOLA
  • Plagiarism Limit: Maximum 10%
  • Co-authorship: Limited to two authors per essay

Note: Speaking footnotes (maximum 50 words each) are allowed but optional. The use of Artificial Intelligence tools for essay submissions is strictly prohibited.

Participants must submit their essays via the Google Form linked below. The document must be named in the following format: <Title of the Paper EssayComp>.

Prizes and Recognition

The top three essays will be recognized with cash prizes and merit certificates:

  • 1st Prize: INR 5000
  • 2nd Prize: INR 3000
  • 3rd Prize: INR 2000

In addition, the top three entries will be published on the GCRCJS Crime & Justice Blog, allowing winners to showcase their research to a broader audience. All participants will receive Certificates of Participation.
