About the Organization

Africa in the Moot is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization committed to empowering African law students by enabling their participation in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). With support spanning 15 African jurisdictions and over 100 students annually, the organization provides logistical assistance, financial support, training, and global networking opportunities to nurture future leaders in international arbitration. Africa in the Moot has been globally recognized for its efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in arbitration by leading institutions including the Global Arbitration Review, Africa Arbitration Awards, and the African Arbitration Association.


About the Call

To sustain and expand its impactful work, Africa in the Moot is seeking 1–2 passionate and committed individuals to join its Board of Directors. This opportunity is ideal for experienced professionals in international arbitration and legal education, eager to support legal talent across Africa. Board members play a hands-on role in guiding strategy, operations, and stakeholder engagement, working remotely with a diverse, international team.

Format/Structure

  • Eligibility Requirements:
    • Minimum 6 years of experience in legal practice or academia.
    • Familiarity with the Vis Moot and/or international commercial arbitration.
    • Strong commitment to DEI, legal education, and capacity-building in Africa.
    • Proven leadership and team management experience.
    • Availability to contribute 7–10 hours/week and attend weekly CET-time board meetings.
    • Prior nonprofit or volunteer experience is a plus, but not mandatory.
  • Expectations:
    • Active involvement in all operational areas.
    • Annual travel to international events (Vienna and Nairobi).
    • This is a voluntary, non-remunerated position; directors cover their own travel costs.
  • Selection Process:

    • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a virtual interview.

Location
