About the University/Organization

The Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law (UNYB) is a peer-reviewed academic publication produced by the Max Planck Foundation and published by Brill since 2014. Founded in 1997 by the Directors of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, the UNYB is the first scholarly periodical devoted to the legal activities of the United Nations.

Indexed by Scopus, the Yearbook is edited by Professor Erika de Wet and Dr. Kathrin Maria Scherr and remains a premier platform for scholarly discourse on United Nations law and related developments in public international law and comparative constitutional law.

About the Event

The 29th Volume of the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law announces a special thematic forum titled “Rethinking the Notion of Territory in International Law.” With shifting geopolitical dynamics, climate change, and the emergence of non-state actors, classical understandings of “territory” in international law are being challenged. This call for submissions invites academics, scholars, and legal professionals to engage with contemporary debates on the relevance and resilience of territorial concepts.

The forum encourages interdisciplinary, doctrinal, theoretical, and historical contributions that explore the transformation of territory as a legal and political construct and its role in issues like sovereignty, self-determination, occupation, climate-induced displacement, and territorial integrity under duress.
