The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory, is organizing a Legal History Workshop titled ‘Contours of Legal History In India: Pedagogy and Research’. This event will be held on March 27-28, 2025, at the NLSIU campus, Bengaluru. Researchers and scholars are invited to submit their proposals by October 20, 2024.
Established in 1988, NLSIU Bengaluru is India’s premier law school, known for its rigorous academic programs, research, and legal studies. The Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory is a globally renowned research institute based in Frankfurt, Germany. It focuses on advancing the field of legal history and legal theory and collaborates with institutions worldwide to explore interdisciplinary perspectives on law.
The Contours of Legal History in India: Pedagogy and Research workshop aims to bring together scholars, PhD students, and early career researchers to discuss new approaches to legal history in India. The focus of this workshop is on rethinking how law intersects with society in historical contexts, including colonial, post-colonial, and pre-colonial eras. The workshop will explore the dynamic life of law beyond doctrinal texts and highlight how various actors—petitioners, litigants, and lawyers—have shaped the legal landscape both within and outside courtrooms.
Through this workshop, the organizers aim to explore critical issues such as the decolonization of legal history, the intersections of historical and legal methodologies, and how legal history research can influence pedagogical practices. Participants will present their ongoing research and receive feedback from experts in the field.
PhD students (preferably in the writing stage) and early career researchers affiliated with Indian universities are invited to submit a 400-word abstract and a 200-word biography by October 20, 2024 (11:59 PM IST). The submissions should fit within the following themes:
Submissions should be made in a single PDF document titled with the applicant’s full name. Please email your abstract and bio to clhi@lhlt.mpg.de.
Selected applicants will be informed by December 20, 2024. Once selected, participants are required to submit a 4000-word draft expanding on their proposal by February 15, 2025.
Participants will be provided with financial support for travel and accommodation.
