About the Communications and Media Law Association (CAMLA)

The Communications and Media Law Association (CAMLA) is an influential organization that brings together a diverse range of professionals interested in communications and media law and policy. About the Event

The CAMLA Essay Competition 2024 is an exciting opportunity for legal students, recent law graduates, and early-career lawyers in Australia to showcase their legal writing and analytical skills. The competition encourages original thought in the areas of communications and media law and aims to improve connections between students and experienced practitioners.

Participants are invited to submit essays related to communications or media law. Essays must be between 1,000 to 3,000 words (excluding footnotes and attachments), and all submissions must adhere to the Australian Guide to Legal Citation.

Event Dates

  • Submission Deadline: November 3, 2024 (5:00 PM)
  • Winner Announcement: Finalists will be notified by December 2, 2024, and prizes will be awarded at the CAMLA End of Year drinks in early December 2024. Please note that finalists are welcome to attend the event in Sydney, but they will be responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Essay Submission Guidelines

  • Essays must be the original work of the author and should not have been previously published.
  • Essays may be written as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate course or specifically for this competition.
  • Word Limit: Between 1,000 – 3,000 words (exclusive of footnotes, annexures, and attachments).
  • Citation Style: The Australian Guide to Legal Citation style is preferred.
  • Submission Process: All entries must be submitted via email to contact@camla.org.au. Include your name, address, email, telephone number, and the tertiary institution (if applicable) on a separate, detachable sheet or in the covering email. No identifiers should be included in the essay itself.
  • Essay Title: Each entry must have a unique title, and all pages should be numbered.

Prizes

The CAMLA Essay Competition offers generous prizes for the top three essays:

  • 1st Prize: AUD $1,000, a mentoring session with a CAMLA Board or CAMLA Young Lawyers Committee member, and a one-year CAMLA membership.
  • 2nd Prize: AUD $600 and a one-year CAMLA membership.
  • 3rd Prize: AUD $400 and a one-year CAMLA membership.

Selected essays may also be considered for publication in CAMLA’s Communications Law Bulletin, providing participants with significant exposure within the legal and media industries.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in the CAMLA Essay Competition 2024, entrants must meet the following criteria:

- Advertisement -
  • Lawyers: Admitted lawyers residing in Australia with up to five years post-admission experience.
  • Graduates: Recent law graduates residing in Australia who are awaiting admission.
  • Students: Legal students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate law course at an Australian tertiary institution.

Location and Submission

This is an online competition, and all entries should be submitted electronically to contact@camla.org.au. There is no need for in-person attendance unless participants are invited as finalists to the CAMLA End of Year drinks in Sydney.
