About the Organization

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a statutory public body established on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance, later given statutory status by the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The Commission is expressly mandated to promote human rights literacy and awareness under Section 12(h) of the Act and has played a vital role in mainstreaming human rights discourse across the country.

About the Event

To advance awareness among university students about the importance of protecting and promoting human rights, NHRC has been organizing Summer and Winter Internship Programmes since 1998 and 2000 respectively. The Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025 is designed to provide intensive exposure to human rights issues through academic sessions, field visits, interactive activities, and project work. The programme will be conducted in offline mode in New Delhi, offering students the opportunity to engage with experts and institutions working in the field.

Format / Structure

The internship will include approximately 70–75 sessions and multiple engaging activities:

• Classroom lectures on diverse human rights issues
• Interaction with the Hon’ble Chairperson and Members of NHRC
• Group Research Project and Book Review assignments
• Human Rights films & discussions on key social issues such as child labour, trafficking, rights of elderly, education and health
• Field Visits to Police Stations, Jails, NGOs, Parliament, Supreme Court, and national commissions (Women, Minorities, SC/ST, NCPCR, NGT, NALSA)

Eligibility

Eligible students from across India may apply, including:

• Students who have completed the 1st year of a 3-year LL.B. course and are now in 2nd or 3rd year
• Students who have completed 3 years or 6 semesters of a 5-year law program and are now in the 4th or 5th year
• Postgraduate students pursuing PG Diploma/MA in Human Rights, or PG courses in Political Science, Sociology, MSW, Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, and other Social Sciences disciplines (preference to final-year students)

• Mark sheets of 10th, 12th, all semesters of Graduation & current course
• Statement of Purpose (SOP)
• Recommendation Letter from HOD/Dean/Principal (dated after advertisement release) in Annexure I format
