CAIL is proud to announce the St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara Moot Court Competition 2025, a prestigious national moot aimed at fostering advocacy skills and legal acumen among law students. This offline competition will be held on May 17-18, 2025, at the Christ Academy Institute of Law, Bengaluru.

This year’s moot proposition is centered on International Criminal Law, specifically addressing jurisdictional challenges, state sovereignty, and war crimes. Participants will engage in complex legal arguments before esteemed judges, gaining real-world litigation exposure in a competitive yet intellectually stimulating environment.

Eligibility & Team Composition

• Open to bona fide undergraduate law students pursuing 3-year LL.B. or 5-year integrated LL.B. programs from recognized law institutions in India.
• Cross-institutional teams are allowed.
• Each team must comprise:
  • 2 or 3 members (2 speakers + 1 researcher or 2 speakers).
  • No extra members or observers will be permitted.

Moot Proposition Overview

The 2025 moot problem presents a high-stakes case before the International Criminal Court (ICC) involving:

• Jurisdictional challenges: Whether the ICC can prosecute war crimes committed by leaders of a state that is not a party to the Rome Statute.
• State sovereignty vs. international accountability: The debate on universal jurisdiction vs. non-interference.
• Legitimacy of the ICC’s arrest warrant: Whether the charges were politically motivated or legally sound.
• Self-defense vs. war crimes: Examining the lawfulness of military operations affecting civilian populations.

Evaluation Criteria

Oral Presentation will be judged on:

• Organization & presentation of facts
• Application of legal principles
• Articulation of issues
• Response to judges’ questions
• Use of authorities and precedents
• Courtroom etiquettes

Memorials will be evaluated on:

• Interpretation of law
• Ingenuity & reasoning
• Citation format & use of authorities
• Language & clarity of arguments

Runner-up: ₹20,000
Best Memorial: ₹5,000
