Call for Applications: Associate (Litigation) at National Law University, Delhi

National Law University, Delhi through Project 39A is seeking to engage two Associates (Litigation) on a contractual basis at its Dwarka campus, New Delhi. The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of annual extensions at the University’s discretion. Associates will primarily work on cases concerning prisoners sentenced to death.

About Project 39A

Project 39A, inspired by Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution, aims to promote equal justice. The Project engages in litigation, research, and communications related to forensics, torture, legal aid, mental health, and the death penalty. For more information, visit Project 39A.

Litigation Initiative

Project 39A provides pro bono legal assistance to prisoners sentenced to death across India and represents those challenging the rejection of their mercy petitions. The Project engages in strategic litigation to address procedural and substantive issues in the criminal justice system, briefing senior advocates in the Supreme Court and High Courts. The Project has been involved in various Criminal Appeals, Review Petitions, and Writ Petitions.

Responsibilities

• Drafting: Criminal appeals, review petitions, writ petitions, applications, rejoinders, mercy petitions, and other legal documents.
• Assisting: Brief and assist senior advocates and advocates on record.
• Strategy Development: Devise legal strategies and arguments for cases and carry out related research.
• Prison Visits: Conduct detailed interviews with prisoners sentenced to death and their families.
• Communication: Regularly communicate with prison authorities to obtain case-specific information and documents.
• Representation: Present Project 39A’s work at appropriate fora.
• Research & Strategy: Contribute to research and strategic efforts as required.
• Workshops & Conferences: Organize training workshops and conferences.
• Additional Duties: Undertake any other necessary work to further the aims of Project 39A.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Graduate with an LLB degree and enrollment with any State Bar Council.
• Preference for candidates with two or more years of full-time criminal litigation experience at the appellate stage.
• Ability to read, write, and speak different Indian languages preferred but not mandatory.
• Full-time position based in Delhi.

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Application Process

Interested candidates should send their résumé and a statement of purpose (maximum 750 words) explaining their interest in representing prisoners sentenced to death and the contribution they envision through this position. Deadline: Applications must be submitted by midnight of 18th August 2024. Interviews will be scheduled thereafter, with dates notified separately. Shortlisted candidates may undergo further selection rounds if necessary.
