About the Role

This opportunity is aimed at seasoned legal professionals with expertise in international arbitration and U.S. litigation. The role is tailored for individuals with a robust understanding of cross-border disputes involving commercial contracts, intellectual property, trade compliance, and supply chain dynamics—particularly within the energy and technology sectors.

This is a rare in-house legal opportunity to work at the convergence of cutting-edge battery technology, complex international legal systems, and dynamic global operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-border litigation and international arbitration involving CATL’s U.S. operations.
  • Manage U.S. litigation across a broad spectrum of legal areas including IP, commercial disputes, regulatory compliance, and trade matters.
  • Direct outside counsel in high-stakes U.S. and international legal proceedings.
  • Serve as a legal liaison between U.S. and China-based teams to ensure strategic alignment and cultural fluency.
  • Develop and implement internal dispute resolution frameworks and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide guidance on procedural issues such as discovery, privilege, and interim relief in the U.S. litigation system.
  • Assist in the enforcement of international arbitral awards or foreign judgments in the U.S., including handling applications under 28 U.S.C. § 1782.
  • Stay informed on litigation trends, risk exposure, and global compliance strategies.

Qualifications & Eligibility

  • Education: J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensing: Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years of post-qualification experience in international arbitration and U.S. litigation.
  • Preferred Background: In-house experience with multinational corporations, especially those in the technology, manufacturing, or energy sectors.
  • Substantive Knowledge: Familiarity with international arbitration frameworks (e.g., ICC, HKIAC, SIAC), U.S. civil procedure, trade compliance, IP litigation, and commercial contracts.
  • Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to influence across jurisdictions and teams.
    • Cross-cultural fluency and coordination.
  • Language: Mandarin proficiency is a plus, but not mandatory.

Location and Mode

  • Location: Detroit, Michigan, United States
  • Mode: Full-time, in-office
