The World Bank Legal Internship Program invites students to immerse themselves in the mission and operations of the World Bank and the Legal Vice Presidency, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and the latest research experiences to the forefront of global development.

First-Hand Experience

Interns will experience the day-to-day operations of the World Bank by closely collaborating with staff in the Legal Vice Presidency. Interns will work directly with outstanding and inspiring development professionals and senior management, contributing to the legal services provided by the Legal Vice Presidency. Participants will also have the chance to attend high-profile events and conferences organized during their internship.

Multicultural Environment

The World Bank Legal Internship Program offers a unique opportunity to improve legal skills while working in a diverse and multicultural environment. Interns will be exposed to various legal issues and practices, enriching their understanding and broadening their professional network.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the World Bank Legal Internship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must hold citizenship of any IBRD member state.
  • Academic Enrollment: Must be enrolled in an LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent legal academic program during the internship period.
  • Language Proficiency: Must have an excellent command of the English language. Preference will be given to candidates with proficiency in a second language, especially one of the working languages of IBRD (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Applications are welcomed from both international and U.S.-based students.

Internship Cycles

The World Bank Legal Internship Program is offered thrice a year:

Summer Internship Program

  • Application Period: December 1 to December 31
  • Internship Period: 10-12 weeks, typically between June and August

Fall Internship Program

  • Application Period: April 1 to April 30
  • Internship Period: 10-12 weeks, typically between September and November

Spring Internship Program

  • Application Period: September 1 to September 30
  • Internship Period: 10-12 weeks, typically between March and May

Internships at country offices are limited to locations where a lawyer from the Legal Vice Presidency is present.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following documents through the provided application link:

  • Résumé
  • Statement of Interest
  • Proof of enrollment in a law degree (LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent) and academic transcript(s)
  • Short essay responding to a research question posed by the Legal Vice Presidency for the current application period

Intern Responsibilities

Interns will engage in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Performing research on assigned issues using various sources
  • Conducting comparative legal analyses
  • Participating in task/project teams
  • Assisting in the preparation and organization of conferences and meetings

Additional Information

  • Visa: Interns must have valid student visa documents sponsored by their educational institutions. The World Bank may assist with visa documents in exceptional cases.
  • Compensation: The World Bank does not provide monetary compensation. Interns must secure funding through their university or other sponsoring organizations or receive academic credit equivalent to the Bank’s fee schedule.
  • Medical Insurance: Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and must show proof of coverage.
  • Selection Process: Interns are selected through a competitive process. The World Bank Group is an equal opportunity employer.
