About the Competition:

The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is organizing an essay competition to commemorate National Consumer Day 2024 (24th December). This competition aims to encourage students, professionals, and academics to explore and contribute to the field of consumer law and policy.


Important Dates:

  • Submissions Open: October 6, 2024
  • Submission Deadline: November 10, 2024
  • Announcement of Results: December 24, 2024 (National Consumer Rights Day)

Themes:
Participants can choose from the following indicative themes or explore other relevant topics under the broad theme of consumer protection:

  • Sustainability and Consumer Protection (in light of Sustainable Development Goals)
  • Consumer Safety in the Digital World
  • Inclusion under Consumer Protection: Ensuring the Rights of Vulnerable Groups
  • Impact of Social Media on Consumer Behaviour and Protection
  • Insights from International Consumer Law for Indian Consumer Law
  • Cross-border E-commerce and Consumer Protection
  • Greenwashing and Consumer Misinformation
  • Evaluation of the Grievance Redressal Mechanism in India

Eligibility:

The competition is open to everyone, including:

  • Students
  • Academicians
  • Professionals
  • Government Officials
  • Members of Consumer Fora
  • Voluntary Consumer Organizations (VCOs)/NGOs

Submission Guidelines:

  • Essays must be written in English and submitted as a Microsoft Word document (.doc/.docx).
  • Co-authorship is permitted (maximum of one co-author).
  • Each participant or team is allowed only one submission. Multiple submissions will be disqualified.
  • Formatting Specifications:
  • Main Body: Times New Roman, Font Size 12, Line Spacing 1.5
  • Footnotes: Times New Roman, Font Size 10, Line Spacing 1.0
  • Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides
  • The essay should be between 3000-3500 words (excluding footnotes).
  • Footnotes must follow the Bluebook citation style (20th edition).
  • The essay must include an abstract (maximum 250 words) indicating the theme/topic.
  • Essays with a similarity score of more than 15% (excluding footnotes) will be rejected.

Submission Process:

All entries must be submitted via the Google Form provided here by November 10, 2024, at 11:59 PM. Incomplete or plagiarized submissions will not be considered.


Prizes & Certificates:

  • First Prize: ₹4,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Second Prize: ₹3,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Third Prize: ₹2,000 + Certificate of Merit

Selected essays may be considered for publication in the Chair’s Newsletter on Consumer Law.
