Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai, established in 1855, is India’s oldest law college and one of its most prestigious. About the National Legal Essay Competition

The National Legal Essay Competition is organized by the Magazine Committee of Government Law College, Mumbai, in association with the Dinesh Vyas Public Charitable Trust. This competition is held in memory of Mr. Dinesh Vyas, a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and an alumnus of GLC, Mumbai. The aim of the competition is to encourage legal writing and analysis among law students, offering them a platform to present their views on pertinent legal issues.

This competition provides an excellent opportunity for law students across India to sharpen their analytical skills, engage in intellectual debates, and present their perspectives on key legal challenges.

Prize Pool

The competition offers attractive cash prizes:

  • First Prize: ₹20,000
  • Second Prize: ₹15,000
  • Third Prize: ₹10,000
  • Two Consolation Prizes: ₹7,500 each

Topics for Submission

Participants may choose one of the following topics for their essay submission:

  1. One Nation, One Election: An Analysis of the Report and Its Implications for Indian Democracy.
  2. Evaluating the Telecommunications Act 2023: Advancements, Challenges, and Implications for India’s Digital Future.
  3. Analysing the Ayodhya Rami Reddy Alla vs. PCIT Case: Implications and Lessons from the Telangana High Court’s Ruling on General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR).
  4. Fair Use in Copyright: Limits on Educational and Research Use in Light of Recent US Copyright Litigation.
  5. Restrictions on Religious Symbols in Educational Institutes: Balancing Secularism and Religious Freedom.
  6. Reforming the International Court of Justice (ICJ): Addressing Shortcomings in War Crimes Accountability.

Eligibility

  • Open to students enrolled in 5-year integrated law courses, 3-year LL.B. courses, or LL.M. programs at any recognized university in India or abroad.
  • Co-authorship is permitted, with a maximum of two authors per submission.

Submission Guidelines

  • Language: English
  • Word Limit: 5000 words (inclusive of footnotes)
  • Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing, A4 size paper
  • Citation Style: ILI (Indian Law Institute) or Bluebook (20th edition)
  • Plagiarism: Submissions with over 15% plagiarism will be automatically disqualified.
  • Submission Format: Both .doc/.docx and PDF formats are required.

Participants must ensure that their submissions adhere to the guidelines provided by the organizing committee. Failure to comply with the rules may result in disqualification.

How to Register

Participants must fill out the Registration Form and submit their details along with the payment receipt. After registration, participants will be given a team code, which must be used for submission purposes.

Once registered, participants must submit their essays via the Submission Form by the deadline. Both the .doc/.docx file and PDF version of the essay must be uploaded
