About the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi

The National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi (NUSRL), established under the NUSRL Act 2010 by the Jharkhand Government, is dedicated to advancing legal education and research in India. About the Centre for Consumer Research and Policy (CCRP)

The Centre for Consumer Research and Policy (CCRP) at NUSRL Ranchi is dedicated to protecting consumer rights and fostering consumer awareness in India. Led by Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil, NUSRL’s Vice-Chancellor, the Centre works on various facets of consumer rights, providing a forum for research, education, and advocacy to combat unfair trade practices and improve grievance redressal mechanisms. CCRP actively promotes the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, addressing contemporary consumer issues in sectors such as e-commerce, healthcare, financial services, and more. Through workshops, legal literacy campaigns, and policy recommendations, CCRP collaborates with regulatory agencies, NGOs, and academia to bolster consumer rights and make the marketplace more transparent.

About the Competition

The National Moot Court Competition on Consumer Protection Laws 2024 is a prestigious national-level competition designed for law students passionate about consumer law and rights. This event is supported by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Government of India, and is aimed at encouraging in-depth exploration of consumer protection law, including unfair trade practices, e-commerce issues, and consumer rights. Participants will have the chance to demonstrate their understanding of these laws through written and oral advocacy, gaining valuable exposure to real-world legal challenges and opportunities to hone their skills in legal research, drafting, and courtroom etiquette.

This moot competition will engage students in a simulated courtroom experience, pushing them to propose innovative solutions to the complex problems faced by consumers today. Participants will tackle legal issues such as advertising ethics, product safety, service quality, and more, enhancing their problem-solving skills and enriching their knowledge of consumer law.


Event Timeline

  • Release of Moot Proposition and Rulebook: 4th October 2024
  • Clarifications Submission Deadline: 16th October 2024
  • Registration Deadline: 5th November 2024
  • Memorial Submission Deadline: 5th November 2024
  • Oral Rounds (Offline):
    • Preliminary and Quarter-finals: 23rd November 2024
    • Semi-finals and Finals: 24th November 2024
  • Awards Ceremony: 24th December 2024, National Consumer Day at New Delhi

Event Format and Rounds

The competition is divided into two main stages:

  1. Memorial Round: All teams submit written memorials for both the Complainant and Opposite Party. Based on the quality of these submissions, 24 teams will qualify for the Oral Rounds.
  2. Oral Rounds: These rounds consist of the Preliminary, Quarter-final, Semi-final, and Final Rounds, where teams argue both sides of the case.

Each round follows specific time allotments and criteria:

  • Preliminary to Semi-final Rounds: Each team receives 30 minutes for arguments, including rebuttal/sur-rebuttal, with each speaker allotted a minimum of 12 minutes.
  • Final Round: 45 minutes per team, with each speaker arguing for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Teams will be evaluated based on criteria like factual understanding, legal knowledge, logical reasoning, and court conduct.


Prize Pool and Awards

The competition has a comprehensive prize pool, recognizing excellence across various aspects:

  • Winning Team: INR 20,000, Trophy, Certificates, and a Felicitation by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, in New Delhi on 24th December 2024.
  • Runners-Up Team: INR 15,000 and Trophy
  • Best Memorial (Complainant/Opposite Party): INR 5,000 each and Trophy
  • Best Speaker: INR 10,000 and Trophy

All participants who complete the competition requirements will receive participation certificates.


Memorial Submission and Formatting Guidelines

Participants must adhere to the following formatting rules:

  • Font: Times New Roman, size 12 for body text (1.5-line spacing) and size 10 for footnotes (single spacing).
  • Margins: 1-inch on all sides.
  • Cover Page: Must include the team code, competition name, case title, and side designation (Complainant or Opposite Party).
  • Citation Style: Bluebook, 20th Edition.
  • Content Structure: Cover Page, Table of Contents, List of Abbreviations, Index of Authorities, Statement of Facts, Issues Raised, Summary of Arguments, Arguments Advanced, Prayer.

Memorials must be submitted electronically in both PDF and Word formats to ccrp@nusrlranchi.ac.in by 11:59 PM on 5th November 2024. Late submissions incur penalties, with disqualification after a specific period.


Registration and Fees

  • Registration Deadline: 5th November 2024
  • Registration Fees:
    • With Accommodation: INR 5,000
    • Without Accommodation: INR 3,000

All fees are non-refundable, and teams can register by filling out the Google Form here. Upon registration, teams will receive a unique code for all competition correspondence.

NUSRL, Ranchi, located along the scenic Ranchi Ring Road, is accessible from key transit points:

  • Birsa Munda Airport: 18 km
  • Ranchi Junction Railway Station: 14 km

Accommodation is available for registered participants for the competition duration (22nd-24th November 2024). Additional nights can be arranged at the participants’ expense.
