About the Event
For its 2024 Volume 55, the NYIL has announced a call for papers centered around the theme “The Manifold Forms of Contemporary International Legal Scholarship.” This volume aims to explore the diverse ways international lawyers are reshaping the landscape of international legal scholarship through traditional academic outlets and modern digital platforms. The editors, Lianne Boer, Daniëlla Dam-de Jong, and Carl Lewis, encourage contributors to reflect on the implications of engaging through various media, from traditional peer-reviewed journals and monographs to blogs, podcasts, social media platforms, and more.
The theme addresses how the choice of format impacts content, reach, and engagement in legal scholarship, particularly in today’s digital age. Contributors are encouraged to examine how different formats shape the way international law is communicated and how these diverse modes enable or constrain scholarly expression and influence.
The volume welcomes contributions on questions such as:
- How do international legal scholars select events and issues for discussion within the framework of international law?
- What are the unique characteristics of newer forms of scholarship, such as blog posts, social media threads, or podcasts, compared to traditional forms like books and journal articles?
- What influence do these forms have on the legal issues discussed, the depth of analysis, and the audience’s engagement?
- Does social media facilitate greater inclusivity, or are there inherent biases in platform-based scholarship?
- What qualifies as international legal scholarship in the digital age, and who qualifies as scholars?
In addition, the volume seeks to engage contributors in comparing how content delivery influences both substance and the reception of scholarly work, particularly in addressing legal phenomena shaped by real-time global events. This critical examination invites interdisciplinary approaches, drawing from fields such as applied linguistics, communication studies, literary theory, and media studies.

- Notification of Abstract Selection: 8 December 2024
- Full Draft Submission Deadline: 24 March 2025

Submission Guidelines and Formatting
- Abstract Requirements: Interested authors should submit an abstract of no more than 400 words outlining the proposed contribution’s key arguments, methodology, and relevance to the volume’s theme.
- Full Draft Requirements: Upon acceptance of the abstract, authors will be invited to submit a draft paper of no more than 10,000 words, including footnotes. All drafts must be formatted according to the NYIL’s style guidelines, which will be shared with authors after acceptance.
- Submission Format: All abstracts and papers must be submitted in Word (.docx) format. Authors should ensure that submissions are double-spaced and conform to the journal’s citation and style standards.

This is an entirely online submission event hosted by the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law editorial team based at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague. The editorial team will manage the review and selection process, as well as any follow-up communications with authors.
