About the Organisation:

Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai is Asia’s oldest law school, established in 1855. Known for its rich legacy and contribution to India’s legal landscape, GLC has nurtured some of India’s greatest legal minds, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Shri Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Justice M.C. Chagla. GLC is dedicated to academic excellence, shaping leaders who contribute to public service, law, and social reform.

Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Mumbai was founded by students of GLC in 2009 to foster greater awareness and understanding of international law. SPIL organizes various educational and competitive events, such as lectures, workshops, and its annual flagship event, the International Law Summit. About the Event:

The Treaty Appreciation Competition (TAC), Mumbai 2024 is an annual event organized by SPIL to provide students with a unique platform to critically analyze and debate international treaties. TAC encourages students to adopt the roles of UN-style delegates and engage in simulated treaty deliberations. This year’s theme, International Environmental Law, focuses on the Aarhus Convention and its implications for sustainable environmental governance. Participants will discuss and critique specific treaty clauses, with a focus on their effects on India, especially within the context of Mumbai’s socio-economic and environmental challenges.

TAC 2024 is structured to foster a comprehensive understanding of international treaties, enhance students’ diplomatic negotiation skills, and encourage policy critique. Event Structure:

1. Written Critique Round (First Round):
   • Participants will submit a written critique analyzing the Competition Module by 20th November 2024. The critique should explore the assigned treaty, proposing recommendations for changes or additions to address environmental and socio-economic issues.
2. Deliberation Round (Second Round):
   • This round will take place on 28th November 2024 at Government Law College, Mumbai. Teams will present their critiques and engage in a structured debate, moderated by Special Rapporteurs. Each team will argue on assigned agenda items, critiquing aspects of the Aarhus Convention as they apply to India’s current environmental landscape.

Eligibility:

• Participants must be enrolled in a recognized institution in Mumbai or nearby areas, pursuing a 3-year LL.B., 5-year integrated LL.B., or LL.M. program.
• Teams must consist of two members, and each team will receive a unique team code for the competition.

• Teams can register by completing the Google Form provided in the registration link.
• Early Bird Registration Fee (until 13th November 2024): INR 2999 (includes lunch and high tea).
• Late Registration Fee (14th-17th November 2024): INR 3499 (includes lunch and high tea).
• Payment details are available in the official brochure, and registration will be confirmed upon payment.

Awards and Merits:

Participants have the chance to win cash prizes totaling over INR 40,000 along with certificates and medals.

• Best Team: INR 15,000
• Runners-Up: INR 10,000
• Second Runner-Up: INR 7,000
• Best Written Critique: INR 5,000
• Best Member (based on Deliberation Round performance): INR 3,000

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation. Winners will also be honored with trophies and medals.
